I had some time to kill and thought I would take excerpts from previous posts about how this forum works and put them into one...I'm sure most of you already know this, but, I was new once too (thanks CanadianMule!) and didn't either have the patience or the smarts (or both) to navigate to page 7 to read all of the previous how to's on this thing...A few things before we get started:
1. If your new, this should be the starter kit that contains most of the information you can use to jump right in.
2. If you notice this on page 2, perhaps someone could "post" something just to bump this back up to the top and keep it on the front page...something simple like "just bumping this up", or, "the guy who did this is a jerk, but, I'm bumping it up anyway", or, "hey, where's the $5 you owe me", or "I'm padding my posts so I can make it to the next level"...I think you get the picture by now.
3. I've tried to keep names and uernames out of this. So, virtually all of the comments here were posted by others already; however please keep this in mind as you read down...
If you have any question, just pm someone, they'll gladly try to help you.

Basically a vine is a great way to spread shows around for the bandwidth impaired or for the people who enjoy getting goodies in the mail.

A vine starts with a seeder. This is a generous person who wants to share a show with others without getting anything in return other than good karma.

Anyone can start a thread by announcing the vine they are going to seed. It is good practice to name the thread with some indication of whats offered inside. Like Allman Brothers Band 03.25.04 Beacon Thr. Inside they post the text file for the show, setlist, and any other information people might want. (ie how many discs, format: shn, audio, FLAC). and the begining of a list template.

Then people start to sign up for the vine.

You sign up by copying and pasting the COMPLETE list of signees from the LAST POST on the LAST PAGE of the thread, so you don't cut anybody off the vine!!

E-mail or pm (they will either list their e-mail address or say something like "pm me") the person above you with your name & address. It's also a good idea to paste the name of the vine in your subject line. Keep in mind that you might get an email requesting the information again if the vine list is long. A lot of people don't/won't save emails/pm's for that long. This can easily be done by finding the person above you post and clicking on their username which opens up the pm message window. The person who signed up behind you would do the same by sending you their name/address.

If you have any question, just pm someone, they'll gladly try to help you.

When the person in front of you gets the disks, they copy them & send the original to you.

You receive the disks, copy them & send the original to the person behind you.

Check your e-mails or PM's daily.

When receiving a vine, make a copy from the ORIGINAL vine that you received and then forward the ORIGINAL vine onto the next person.
All you need to do is to make copies of the discs, when you get them you can keep it on your hard drive or copy to your own blank CDRs, and then send the original discs to the next person on the list. Please do this in a timely fashion. You can copy the files from the CD to a folder on your HD. That should make it faster.

Scan any EXE files...... Naughty little devils......

Please for courtesy, copy the files within 3-4 days and get the package back out.... Long delays almost kill Vines with a large number of sign ups.......
He really means 1-2 days. All you have to do is to re-address the bubble mailer and stamp it and send it on its way.

If you have any question, just pm someone, they'll gladly try to help you.

When lists get really long and the wait had been very long to receive a show, it's best to check if the next guy is still alive and avoid sending blindly to a vine killer.

Vine Rules:

1) Do not steal, that is what it is when you sign up for a vine and do not pass it along.
2) Try to send it out as quick as you can, we understand that things come up. but keeping a vine for over a week is NOT acceptable.
3) Update the vine. When you send it out go back to the thread and add a note to what day you sent it out, that way we can keep track of the progress and it will help us figure out who is moving them slow and/or killing the vines.
4) Just play nice. This a great old school way of getting shows out and around.

If you have any question, just pm someone, they'll gladly try to help you.

There's two different ways, in general, that the music is available. One is on your basic audio discs, which is where you extract the audio CDs to WAV files on your drive, then pass the originals on to the next person. The second type are those spread using a compressed, lossless file storage format such as SHN or FLAC. For these, you'll need a program to 'decode' the compressed files to the WAV files, then, again, pass the originals onward.
SHN software is free and the best place to get it is here:

http://www.etree.org/shncom.html

Lossless means, a great compression without loss of sound quality. There's no loss of quality at all. It's not like mp3, that's a more or less lossy format. You can still play them with the appropriate plugins for winamp on your computer and you can burn them after decoding to wav like any other audio disc.
(for example) one wav file could be 100MB; while the SHN version of it is only 50 MB.

It isn't a big deal to convert shn/ape/flac to wav (audio). It's really simple.
You dont see too many ape files
If you need computer help at all just ask. Lots of great people here always willing to help.

One other distinction is CD vs. DVD vines. The audio vines are always on CD, while the SHN/FLAC vines can be either on CD or DVD. For the latter, you'll need a DVD reader on your computer to, well, read the DVD discs.

In short, here's why vining is soooo cool:
Easy to join. Sign up. Give your address to the guy above you. Get package in. Make a copy on HD. Send original to the next person in line.
Communication is the key to vines running smoothly, Email, PM's, and posts in the thread will be really helpful to all involved.

Don't forget, anyone can seed a vine. Just select a nice show from your collection and seed it here. Believe me, it's nice to watch spreading the shows all over the world, so others can listen to the tunes too.

If you have any question, just pm someone, they'll gladly try to help you.

Wanted to bump this up. C'mon folks this is mostly common sense. Is it too much to ask you to cop up blanks and then just pass the show(s) along. No trade involved, you make your own copy and then pass it along.

If you do not have time to copy the show or shows, please do not sign up for Vines. This is common sense, many seem to not respect this.

Many people after you on the Vine then have to wait until you decide you feel like getting things going again.

Play nice.

I just wanted to bump this back up and reiterate, that when you sign up for a vine, courtesy dictates you personal message the person ahead of you on the vine your address. Some of these threads, once they reach the last person get pushed way back in the forum and you shouldn't assume someone will know you signed up for it.

When corresponding and referring to any vine -
ALWAYS use the EXACT TITLE of the thread!

Go the extra inch and insert a friggin link to the thread!

Also WHEN SEEDING A VINE and NAMING THE THREAD, make it SIMPLE and TO THE POINT!

I'd like to draw attention to the part of the initial instrution that says"PM THE PERSON ABOVE YOU"

Sadly, some people think it is enough to sign up, and leave a note telling someone to PM them, that's wrong.

I'd like to say that if someone doesn't PM the person in front of them, they get skipped. Kinda harsh I know, but it is frustrating when I see it time and time again, and surprise....from the same person or persons all the time. ARHHHH.

Are there any rules about offering vines/trades of bands that don't allow taping?

This is just my opinion and I'm not speaking for anyone else. Offering shows where the bands do not authorize taping opens it up for the possibility that it could end up on ebay. All of the traders/viners I know on this list are stand up folks and only trade for the love of the music. I know its hard to police this sort of thing with everyone. My stance on it is if its illegal, it shouldn't be done.

There have been some posts recently regarding replacements of vines that show up defective somehow. I'd like to address this with the newbies who have good intentions, which I'm guessing if you're reading this, you probably fall into that category.

These are my opinions about etiquette. The condition of a vine is only the responsibility of the person that sent it to you. Contacting the original seeder, about replacing a disc really shouldn't be done. If the person above you can't or won't replace a show well, it sucks, but it also happens. And when those folks are asking something of you, well you can decide whether to respond or not, just like they did.

What I've done in the past is post a note on the thread telling folks about the condition of the vine.

The only time I ever really contact the original seeder is if I am at the end of the line and simply just want to inquire as to what they might wish for me to do with it. (i.e. send it back, or hold on to it for a certain period of time).

Sometimes you can post in the Trades section and/or make a request for assistance in that vine's thread and someone may offer to help you out. I think the key here is to ask for help and not demand it.

I think the best thing to keep in mind is that when you receive a vine, you have accepted responsibility for it for the next person. This responsibility isn't all that difficult, just do the right thing. If you keep that in mind, you'll make friends and collect alot of shows and isn't that point to begin with?!

Folks, please handle these discs carefully. It doesn't take a lot of effort to return them to the sleeves after extracting them. I've received several vines where the discs are dirty & scratched. So far only one was scratched so bad it skipped. Please be considerate of the ones who seed these vines & the folks who follow you on the vines.

Just to reinterate- the receiver keeps a copy of the master for themselves. The master gets passed to the next person. Not all copy programs and disks yield the same results. Don't pass deteriorating performances down the vine. It's really pretty simple.
